Personal History No one wants to claim that they were from Shadow. Spence is no exception.

Until he was 12, the only life Spence knew was that of a rancher. His parents were far from wealthy; in fact, they were the opposite. Both shared a sizable debt to the Angelos family, and had been bound to indentured life on the Angelos ranch since a year after Spence’s birth. Both Sadie and Gregory were tasked with keeping the fields healthy. The cost of doing so rendered Sadie barren, eliminating any chances for Spence to have a brother or sister.

Still, Spence found joy on the ranch. His parents taught him how to service the equipment they used, from hand tools to larger machinery. He was not the only kid, nor the only one whose parents were bound. His life was happy, and he was loved. At least, until the war.

Shadow was one of the first to stand against the Alliance. Spence’s parents did not appreciate the Alliance, but they were not supporters of the war. They saw what few others could, that the Browncoats would not succeed. The Wainwrights quietly arranged for a transport to escape the inevitable without any regard to their forced servitude. When the opportunity to run presented itself, Gregory, Sadie, and Spence disappeared into the night aboard a transport headed west. The destination mattered none, just as long as it was away from the fight.

Even an ounce of caution could not have prevented the unexpected. As the transport was preparing to land on Ezra, one of the VTOL engines failed. The transport lost control, and crash landed on a mountainside. Gregory and Sadie died instantly, leaving Spence behind in the world of the living with four other survivors in the dead of winter. Two days passed before the survivors realized that no one would come looking for them. They rustled up what they could from the debris and started off in the direction they thought would lead them to civilization.

One by one, the survivors succumbed to the elements. Spence would soon be alone. Spence found himself believing that his time was up, and prepared for the inevitable. Just as he was about to close his eyes for the last time, his ears heard a different roar in the wind. He observed two small ships landing nearby in what he could only assume was a black market trade deal of some sort. The reason mattered little to him as Spence really saw one thing: survival. With his last bit of strength, he snuck over to the landing site and aboard a Firefly-class transport without being noticed. He found a quiet corner of the ship and soon passed out.

He managed to avoid detection on the first night, but he was discovered when his starvation got the best of him. Spence was literally dumped at the ship’s next destination, a legal port of call, with no food and no money. With no ranch in sight to put what skills he had to use, Spence sought, bartered, and earned a job at the port, performing routine maintenance and fueling ships. The pay was meager, and Spence was forced to remain below the poverty level. His only way out was to make a deal, and it wasn’t until after he’d been working with Adelai Niska for a year that Spence realized that he had suddenly started mirroring his parent’s lives.

Spence’s ability with mechanics and engineering soon showed its brightness, and Niska had him move from job to job on different ships to make sure they kept flying. Because, after all, if a ship kept flying, it could finish its job. And if it finished its job, then Niska would get his money. And if anyone dared to cheat Niska, then Spence was to keep that from happening.

Spence did not enjoy having to threaten, or having to maim or kill. Every time it made him sick, and Spence wanted out. He soon learned that the only way he could get out was through death, and that option simply wasn’t appealing. So, Spence just went along with it all. After all, surely one day, an opportunity would present itself.

Right?
